  1. Masque is a spectacular and essentially 
  2. aristocratic entertainment with a fantastic 
  3. or mythological theme in which music, dance, 
  4. and extravagant costumes and scenic design 
  5. figured larger than plot. Originating in 
  6. Italy, where members of the court actively 
  7. participated in the performances, the masque 
  8. reached its height of popularity at the 
  9. English court between 1600 and 1640, with the 
  10. collaboration of Ben Jonson as writer and 
  11. Inigo Jones as stage designer.
